Why Is Iowa Trying to Talk About Cannabis With the FDA

If you have any bit of information about the state of medical marijuana programs in the United States today, then you are probably well aware of the great disparity of medical marijuana quality from state to state. In more simple terms, some states have great medical marijuana programs, while other states’ programs are abysmal. Some states have taken the time and effort to make their medical marijuana programs very easy for patients to qualify – they have added all sorts of health conditions, both mental and physical, that can be used to apply for and obtain a medical marijuana card.

They have also made it easier for cannabis cultivators, manufacturers, licensers, and growers to actually sell and provide the cannabis to the medical marijuana patients across the state through various dispensaries. Then you have other states that have fought tooth and nail against the legalization of cannabis for a variety of reasons. A lot of it comes down to the traditional stigma that more conservative states hold against cannabis, even though they are completely ignoring all of the great health benefits that can come from using cannabis. Today we are going to be talking about the state of Iowa. I know – super exciting topic right? Well, Iowa has been one of those states that has been super cautious when it comes to legalizing medical marijuana. However, eventually this state gave way to coming up with a medical marijuana program that can help people with certain conditions. Now the state faces an entirely new question concerning the legalization of adult-use cannabis. There are currently 18 states in our country that have legalized adult use of cannabis, which basically allows anyone over the age of 21 to legally purchase and consume cannabis without a medical marijuana card. At the end of 2021, the state of Iowa received word from the FDA that consented to the legalization of adult use. What does this mean? Well it could mean that we will see adults able to use marijuana in the state of Iowa this year.

Many of the states that have been slow to legalize medical marijuana have medical programs that are very restrictive in nature, meaning that there are not a lot of health conditions that qualify for using a medical card. Compared to a lot of other conservative states, however, Iowa’s medical program is quite substantial. Among the list of qualifying conditions you can find chronic pain, cancer, Crohn’s disease, AIDS and HIV, Parkinson’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, PTSD, seizures, and many more. In order to actually obtain a medical marijiuana card in Iowa, patients must have been diagnosed with one of the conditions on their state’s medical program. The good news for many patients in Iowa is that there is no longer a low-THC cap on cannabis products in the state.

While the types of cannabis products in Iowa are somewhat limited, including capsules, tinctures, creams, lotions, and now vape cartridges, at least there is no longer a low cap on marijuana that needs to be high in THC to actually treat certain medical conditions.  Among other things, it is important to keep in mind just how much people are relying on the THC in their cannabis to treat their pain or anxiety symptoms. If you have ever known someone with chronic pain, then you know that the pain can show up and be very severe in almost an instant. It is super important for medical marijuana patients in the state of Iowa to have better access to cannabis that can actually work quickly and effectively.

There is one thing for certain about consuming cannabis - there’s no right way to do it! Depending on who you ask, some people prefer topicals, creams, oils, dry herbs, gummies, edibles, etc. There are so many different ways to use marijuana that it is really up to you at the end of the day. Marijuana extracts have become really popular in recent years with more legalization in states throughout the country. However, what is a marijuana extract? Basically, it’s a concentrated version of the main chemicals (like THC) that are found in cannabis. These extracts are usually produced in some sort of wax form.
