Can Cannabis improve Motivation

We’ve all heard it: the “Lazy stoner” cannabis stereotype. But did you know that it’s a little different than that?

In a study, they looked at people doing certain trials, where they choose whether they perform a task that’s easy for a decent amount, or for the harder task for a greater reward.

Over 40 people were looked at, and about half of them were considered cannabis users that used it frequently.

It was found that through this, those that used cannabis were able to put more energy into getting the reward, even after changing the amount of the reward, and the possibility of getting this. However, they don’t support any amotivational syndromes and hypothesis

For those who don’t know, amotivational syndrome is basically the lack of drive to do things, including finishing tasks.  They usually don’t think in the future, have bad concentration, and they’re not as interested in the activities that are there. There is a common misconception about some people who use cannabis that they’re going to not be motivated to do well, anything.

This study of course, provided contrary information, especially on part of what the authors have stated.

This of course, also has other insights that are there too. Another study that happened at the University of Colorado, at Boulder, looked at the abilities and the varying behaviors that some people who used marijuana had, especially when related to the exercise that they did. Adults within different states that used medical and recreational marijuana got included.  They controlled different variables, and they looked at how they responded to studies and exercises.

It was found that those who used marijuana were able to have more aerobic, along with anaerobic exercises during the week, than people who didn’t use this period.

Most of the people that endorsed this reported that they were able to enjoy exercise a bit more, and also it improved the recovery after the exercise was done, and about half of them did report that it boosted the exercise motivation that they had.

Some research that was published looked at the marijuana impact on building exercise habits, especially in those who were older. They looked at the exercises and behaviors, the BMI, and also cardiovascular health that was there especially over a program of four months, which was created to boost the physical wellness and activity for those adults who were over the age of 60, and sedentary as well. These results found that compared to those who didn’t use, the ones that used marijuana had a much lower BMI and were able to engage in more exercise on the daily. The study also looked at marijuana use based on patients, discovering it didn’t impact their fitness in a negative manner. Right now, more studies could be used to detail the information, and the patterns and cannabis that was used to understand these health benefits too.

The findings also might be useful for those over 50 as well, as this is the demographic that’s reporting the largest increase of those using marijuana. In another manuscript that was published back in 2021, they observed the results of some of the adolescents that were able to get some different behavioral and other assessments. It was able to adjust the different covariants, and also, some depression and alcohol along with nicotine use, it was found that there was no link between the lack of motivation, and the use of cannabis.

It was found that they usually tended to not focus as much on study though, so keep that in mind when looking at motivation.
